The shades range from a pale sky blue similar to aquamarine, to an electric Swiss blue to a dark blue known as “London blue.” Topaz was unknown in the ancient world. But most rose quartz is mined in the ‘new world’ so the pastel gem did not gain popularity til mining began in the Americas.

Snowflake obsidian sterling silver Tie Tack
(tie tack clutch back is silver-tone)

Obsidian is a natural glass gemstone that was created when lava from a volcano cooled too quickly to form crystals. Although black is the most common color for obsidian, it naturally occurs in many colors such as blue or yellow. Sometimes when lava cools, tiny bits of another mineral are trapped inside creating a pattern such as the white spots of snowflake obsidian. In ancient times, shards of obsidian were used as knives because of their sharp edges. By Roman times, obsidian was carved into seal rings and ornamental objects.

(Snowflake obsidian is a 10x8mm cabochon, untreated ; EACH gemstone will be slightly different, but all will have grayish white spots on a black background; tie tack measures approx. 3/8" high x 5/16" wide)
